Plants Make You Happier

I’ve been spending a lot of days watching leaves grow. Cheering on in celebration as a new leaf unwinds itself to reach the sun. Before this, I'd killed a lot of plants. More than I care to admit. Too much water, too little water…there’s really no telling. I’ve completely turned things around. I bought a few plants about two months ago and they’re thriving even more than I could have hoped for.

They’ve become my companions. They have names. I talk to them. In return, I get to delight in their growth. In addition to making a space look better, plants also offer significant health benefits.

  1. Purifies the air. Plants remove bacteria, mold as well as airborne dust particles. Don’t worry, this doesn’t harm them. They use it for food and you get cleaner air in your living and/or workspace.

  2. Restful sleep. Plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen to help you sleep better.

  3. Better mental health and emotional mood. It’s said that by learning to take care of a plant, you can lower anxiety and depression. In general, studies have shown that people that live with plants are much happier.

  4. Improved productivity. People that have plants are more productive. The plants provide inspiration and heighten creativity.

  5. Strengthens your empathy. By having to take care of another living thing, you become more compassionate and empathetic.
