Yes, There Are Vineyards in Georgia

This time last year I was visiting my first vineyard. I’d added a stop to Rome on my way back from Ghana and found a small vineyard a short train ride away in the town of Frascati. I’d planned to visit some more wineries this year (primarily in France) but with covid still on the loose, I ruled it out months ago.

Well, I was wrong.

On the way back from Getaway cabin, my guy (I don’t know what to call him) surprised me with a trip to a vineyard that was on the way back to the city. I’ve known that there were vineyards in Georgia (wine grows in every US state), but I’ve never stopped at one before or even considered it.

We stopped at Wolf Mountain Vineyards and I was pleasantly surprised. First, the views were amazing. It was the perfect time of year to take in the scenery. The trees were putting on quite the show before their leaves dropped for winter.

We were able to find a seat on the patio as we sampled two tasting flights. I can’t say any of them were knockouts, but I really enjoyed the experience overall and I’d definitely visit again. The chanteloup, a dry white wine with a bit of French oak, was my favorite of the bunch. The port style wine was a complete miss for me. After my trip to Porto, port has a special place in my heart and their version was unfulfilling.

We didn’t get to stay for brunch. We were trying to get on the waitlist and abandoned that idea once we saw that the theme for the month was “Wild Game and Red Wine”. Red wine…great. Wild game? Not so much. Also, I’m not sure I’m ready for buffets post covid. I’m not ruling it out and I’m sure there are other things that are probably just as risky, but…I don’t know.

Either way, I’d definitely come back to Wolf Mountain. I’m also going to look at some more vineyards in Georgia.

One thing that covid has taught me is that there’s so much available in my backyard. I’ve had some amazing experiences this year and I didn’t have to get on a plane to do it. I’m excited to travel again and see more of the world, but just as eager to continue discovering Atlanta and Georgia.
