Is It Safe to Travel to Jamaica?

In November, I went to Jamaica. This wasn’t my first visit. Actually, I’ve been many times and have had the chance to stay all over the island, including Kingston. This trip was a little different however. I was there for work and as a result, had my first jaunt at an all inclusive resort. The bad news for me is that I really dislike all inclusive resorts and this view of Jamaica was nothing close to the place that I’ve experienced my entire life. When the nightly entertainment consisted of a performance of Grease, I knew I was far away from the Jamaica that I loved.

The good news for you is, these resorts shade some of the things that can be unpleasant about the island. All-inclusive resorts are full of beautiful beaches, plenty of alcohol and a very relaxed vibe. Normally, I dislike that people only get to see this view of the island, because it really is a unique place filled with an enormous amount of culture. However, with the current crisis happening in Kingston (the capital) these resorts are a good thing.

This is the Jamaica that most people see. So, yes, Jamaica is still currently safe to travel to despite the turmoil happening in the capital. It’s even safe to leave the compounds the resorts are located on and check out what the actual cities are like. The popular tourist areas–Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios–are quite a distance away from Kingston. (I would even say that quite a few areas in Kingston are safe right now. However, I clearly would NOT hop on a plane to Kingston right now.)

It’s my hope that after this madness is over, there will be a richer more beautiful Jamaica for people to visit. This situation has been coming for a long time and the country finally has a chance to take back the place from the criminals that have had a stronghold on it for decades. I won’t get into the (corrupt) politics of all of this, but I’m happy it’s happening. Ok, happy it’s happening is a stretch. But I am hoping that this is a beginning of turning Jamaica around.

One day, people will be able to enjoy all the things the island has to offer and not just the all-inclusive compounds.
