We live in this strange society that tells us that if we need to talk about some stuff, then we’re crazy. Ummm, how does that make sense? Everyone has issues, right? Can keeping it bottled up inside do any good for anyone involved? Believe me, I’ve met quite a few people that would do well with some quality time on a couch. And there’s nothing wrong with it.
I’ve been to therapy twice in my life, both of which have centered around that whole sex abuse thing. Therapy is easy. Lie.
It’s quite possibly the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to do. I remember one session where I just cried for an hour straight. And I’m not a crier. (Well, I cry over Disney movies and sappy commercials, but I draw the line at my emotions.)
Even though therapy is tough, it’s made me a much better person. I’m much more aware of who I am and why I do the things that I do. And I’ll even go as far as saying that therapy is cool and here’s why:
1. No judgment. You walk in, pour out your guts and nobody will judge you. You can go in and say something like, “I pee on my dog for fun.” Now, while most people would look at you a bit weird and might even tell you that you’re crazy, a therapist will let you talk about it freely.
2. Self awareness. It’s amazing what you end up telling a therapist because they ask the right questions, but it’s also because they do a lot of listening. When you’re able to talk through these things, you start to see patterns and realize many things about yourself.
3. Future. Once you get all of that other stuff out the way, your future is filled with endless possibilities. Part of this, “I can do anything I want,” attitude that I have is because I’ve done the therapy thing. It’s freed me from my past and prepared me for the future. It can do the same for you.
And remember, therapy doesn’t have to mean sitting down with a professional (although I highly recommend it). You can always grab a friend or write it down….just please, get that stuff out. No bueno to keep it in. No bueno.

Wow, how strange that you should write about this subject! I was just speaking to a coworker about my emotions right now and how I feel very trapped and confused about life. She suggested that I should write all my fears and thoughts out in a book and this would be therapeutic. I DO have a book for this very thing but I never use it. I wonder if a therapist would help me. Sometimes I feel horrible for complaining or telling my peoples my fears and wants. I can’t go to my parents (they would never understand) so that mainly leaves my peeprs. Although we are great sounding boards for each other, I wonder if they find me annoying?
Anyway, thanks for this post. I cannot believe how uncanny our thought levels synched today.
