Do You Own Your Name?

A few of my friends are pregnant. And because I’m a weirdo, I immediately reminded them to buy their kid’s names as domain names.

It’s no surprise that they thought this was a crazy suggestion as they worried about diapers, planning baby showers and even what to name the child to begin with. (Seriously, your friend tells you that they’re preggers and you tell them to buy a domain name? It’s odd) However, after a five minute conversation, I realized that they really found it odd because they didn’t even own their own names and couldn’t see the value in it.

I bought this domain, shannonsevans.com, months before I had any idea what I would do with it. (I actually still have no idea what I will do with it, so until then, I write.) There were several reasons why I knew to own it and also why you should own yours…and even why my friend’s unborn kids better get one too.

It’s all about personal branding folks.

1. Everyone is googled. On my photography blog, I track the hits using google analytics. People are always wandering onto my site because they’ve googled someone that I have written about. Now, wouldn’t it be nice if when people googled you they found information that you’ve put out there. It might not matter too much in everyday situations, but just think about when people like employers do it. What better way than to win someone over by having a website that’s all about you. Just don’t forget to put the url on your resume and business cards.

2. Everyone has a talent. My friends are some of the most talented people that I know. In the mix, you have a poet, a musician, a writer, a baker, and many more talents flowing. While, their passions might be dangling in the background to satisfy the need to make a living in the immediate, one day, they might want to capitalize on these things.

3. Everyone can be known for something. Even if you don’t think you have a recognizable talent, you can still be known for something. You can actually be known for anything that you want. That’s how powerful the Internet is. A good way to become an authority on anything is to have your own domain name.
So my friends, if you don’t already own your name, go and nab it quickly. If you’re planning on having the site hosted now (having it live) I would highly recommend using Bluehost. I have all of my sites hosted using them and they are beyond great.

Everyone has an image, even unborn babies.
