I was reading the other day that Jada and Will Smith fired the principal from their Scientology school. I really don’t comment too much on celebrity gossip, but this incident reminded me of the time that I worked for a few “doctors” that were scientologists. It was a few years ago, but the whole thing was cultish. However, while there, I learned one the secret to stopping an argument.
It’s actually quite simple and it really works. The secret is, if you’re in an argument with someone (and you want it to end), just repeat what they say. Yup, it’s that simple.
For example (this is not the greatest example in the world, but best I could do under all this pressure…work with it):
Person A (screaming, kinda): I’m pissed that you didn’t call me yesterday when you said you were going to.
Person B (calmly, but not condescending): So you’re saying that you’re angry because I didn’t call you yesterday.
Person A (now calm): Umm, yes.
Person B: Ok. I got it.
Argument ends.
The logic is simple: People just want to know that they are being heard. If you acknowledge someone’s thoughts and feelings (even if you don’t agree with them) the argument ends.
* This post is definitely not in support of Scientology, but I’m a firm believer that you can learn something form every religion regardless of your own belief.
