It’s clear to me that Erykah Badu has never been to Brazil. And here’s why:

I was walking to Porto da Barra to meet Adriana so that we could head to a dancehall at Zauber. As I walked, I stared at the ocean… (Ok, this has absolutely nothing to the story so I’ll skip over it, but before I do, let me just say that I can stare at the ocean forever.)

Anyway, I see a random guy across the street trying to get my attention. He asks if he can cross the street and talk to me. (This is completely weird because how can I possibly stop you from crossing the street.)

I stop. He comes over. He tells me how beautiful I am. (This just doesn’t get old. Having at least 10 people tell you that you’re beautiful every day is something worth getting used to. Especially when they say it in Portuguese with words like, “Muito linda. Muito bellosa. Muito bella.” And don’t forget about the long gaze and the stroke on the arm and…. ok that’s enough.)

We speak for a second. He says I’m so beautiful and that he has to kiss me…

Whew. Crossing the street because you have to kiss someone that you’ve never met. That’s the kind of thing you only find in Brazil. And it’s one of the things that I love about this place. People kiss…a lot. And they kiss everywhere—on the beach, in the mall, on a random sidewalk. And they’re passionate.

One day, I saw a couple preparing to cross the street. There were a few cars passing by which gave the man no more than 20 seconds to gently lean over and kiss the woman on her neck.

Why didn’t everyone else get the memo that kissing to kiss is a beautiful thing?

So, who thinks I kissed the guy on the street?
