I’m talking about my hair, but before I go any further, let me just make a disclaimer that this will not turn into a natural hair care blog. There are PLENTY o’ blogs out there and they do a great job. These next few posts simply chronicle my experience. And since I’m at disclaimers, I should another: Ummm, I’m not saying that natural hair is better than relaxed hair. This is just my mood at the moment. Do what you do best.
As, I was saying…
I’m natural. I chopped off all my hair in October of 2008, so I guess that means I’ve been rocking this fro for about 8 months. Yikes! It’s definitely gone by fast and it’s grown so much. (Although it never looks like it because the shrinkage is beyond wild.)

Me, 3 months natural
Why did I cut my hair? I’ve actually always loved natural hair, but I never thought it would look good on me (and boy was I wrong, it looks damn good). However, one day I said enough (yabasta) to the chemicals. I stopped perming my hair and cutting off the permed ends little by little. My hair actually looked completely crazy. So after about two months of transitioning, I cut it all off. The naps were winning this battle and the permed ends felt (and looked) dead.
Once I chopped it off. I felt so free. I finally realized what everyone in all those forums (I read everything on the web before and after I chopped) were talking about. It’s easily one of the top 5 decisions that I’ve made in my life.
And here are the top 5 things I love about it:
1. I can play in the rain. Or any type of water for that matter. The week after I cut my hair, I went to Puerto Rico. It felt really great to splash in the waves, get drizzled on in the rain forest and be caught in a torrential downpour in a canoe…all without having to worry about messing up my hair.
2. The cost. Except for when I first cut my hair and spent money trying to figure out what shit would work in it, I don’t spend a lot of money. I found out quickly that my hair is actually pretty simple. It loves water and leave in conditioner (I’ll give my holy grail items another day). No more bi-weekly trips to the salon. Which brings me to number 3:
3. I have more free time. I abso hated going to the salon. It sucked up so much of my time. I would rather blowdry my face than sit in a salon and wait to get my hair done.
4. No bad hair days. Really, I don’t have bad hair days. There are days when my hair looks better than others. But for the rest of the time, I just let it do what it wants. It looks fly to me.
5. Confidence. I’m way more confident than I’ve ever been. When you have short hair, there’s nothing to hide behind. I had to get VERY comfortable and very fast.
That’s it for now. Tomorrow, I will run through my favorite natural hair websites and products.

Hey Its Fatima ….surfing the good old net…stopping by.
Right now I am evaluating all your reasons. I just lost the fun and confidence in it all.. I am running out of styles and patience to take care of it. I think its the between state that is frustrating… Not too long to actually put up and not short enough to just wet and Go all the time. Getting more tangled too. I have been fighting the urge to use that creamy crack cause I don’t feel pretty. But I hear its just a phase.
Congrats on the big cut! Good luck with your fro!

Oh no! Don’t tell me that. I’m not sure what it will look like in the in between stage. It will probably frustrate me also and I’ll probably push it down more into a fro. I just don’t see the creamy crack as an option though.
The tangles….ughhh. I’m sure I’ve pulled out tons of my hair. Idk, maybe I will start over?

Whoop….it wasn’t to scare you. That’s just me ranting lol It feels great knowing there are no chemicals but I am still learning to care for it so that I can embrace it more. I wouldn’t relax. No bueno and I don’t have the courage to anyway.
Enjoy your vacation!!
